Weighted Chain
Manriki Gusari, Kusari Fundo, Rope Dart, Meteor Hammer, Sectional Chain Whip amongst many others
It has occurred to me that an explanation of the physics behind the power or force of the weighted chain may be required. I wish it to be understood that by doing so, I am not claiming any expertise or rank over such a weapon. With that said For the time being I wish you to imagine in your mind the weight of the chain as the ball from a cannon or the bullet fired from a small arm.
Please imagine the chain as the barrel of that cannon or small arm.
Now imagine your body movement as the explosive charge that propels the bullet down the barrel/chain.
Imagine your eyes as the sights of the weapon and your mind as the operator.
We know that a small rock tossed at a person is not going to hurt or effect the individual that much. We also know that if the individual most likely would be able to prepare or brace them selves for an impact of such a stone. As such the rock/ bullet/ weight must be delivered with speed and from a hidden agenda better known as a surprise attack.
As such the weighted chain is small fast and always used from a concealed position. The weapon is NEVER deployed for intimidation. Its deployment for use is fast and precise much like the strike of a Viper or Cobra; it's used to make that first and hopefully only strike count.
Just as operating a firearm has risks such as uncontrollable recoil from an over sized weapon or the effects of a hot spent casing flying back in our face. So too are dangers within the use of the Weighted Chain. As such follow through is required within each strike. Body Movement followed by counter body movement is required by its user to avoid injury from his/her own weapon. Imagine this body movement to be much like the blow back action, of a semi automatic, blow back action, pistol recycling and loading the next round.
Just as firearm users are often taught to aim for center of mass for full effect so too are weight chain users advised to use target placement for maximum effect. In the case of the chain this is usually within the eyes, face, nose, throat, forehead and skull regions. Sides of arms and mid body strikes with the weighted chain have little to no effect. Especially when dealing with a person pumped up on alcohol/drugs or adrenaline.
Firearm users are often taught to fire until the treat is over. In the same spirit or sense of it so too are weighted chain practitioners taught to use the full weapon, not half or partial. Always remember that the weight is just like the bullet or projectile from the firearm with the chain being the barrel. The bullet has maximum velocity after it's gone through the full barrel.
Just as the barrel and stock of a firearm can be used to strike with in certain yet rare situations. So too can the chain portion be used too disarm/ entangle/ trap and even throw an opponent. This of course requires more training and fore thought. With experience time and training by qualified instructors these techniques slowly come to light. One also has to practice and go on a road of self-discovery. Please remember when training within any weapon system to use caution not to cause injury to your self or others. As such may I suggest soft training formats at first working your way up to authentic weights and styles of such weapons. Above all think of it as a learning experience and the best way to learn is to have fun while training. Be Safe!
