Mavericks Big Wave Surf Competition Jan. 12th, 2008

The is footage of the 2008 Mavericks Big Wave Surfing competition at Half Moon Bay, CA.

A nice vignette of wipeouts is at the end of the video...

Jeff made the call to the 24 competitors on Friday Jan. 11, giving everyone 24 hours to arrive and be in the water...

At 3pm, Greg Long was crowned the $30K winner...

Though the surf wasn't as big this year as in 06', it was still amazing to see.

I took this with a Sony DCR-SR60 with a 2X teleconverter from about 3/4 miles away on the highest bluff that the spectators can get to. Unfortunately at this distance, a couple millimeters movement on the tripod is all that is needed to pan, making the tracking of the surfers from right to left a bit choppy.

I check the camera and is has 12x optical and 800 digital. I guess you did not use the digital. So using the 2X Teleconverter, do you know how much is that in mm?

Where were you? How much does it cost to ride the boats I see in the back?

12X with the 2X teleconverter is approximately 210mm.

I was on "Bluff 3" (I think that is what they call it)...

I costs about $275 per person to go on the boats out...

yea great vid...music...not too great..its really good to see the paddle in part of every wave..most high end vids just show the take off...no paddle...you got it good,,we surfed bigger here in febuary with 37 degree water...great yob my friend
