Dave your discussion of the axe particularly the double bit axe. Brought back a memory of my long gone grandfather who was my woodsman teacher. He had a black line across his forehead. When I was a teen I summoned enough courage to ask about it, He told me he was careless with a double bit as a young boy and his grandmother grabbed a handfull of spiderwebs and chimney soot to stop the bleeding.

@trackerscott no need to answer question I saw reply to @tanksanatra "sorry brother but to me part of being a Common man, is bugig things ONE TIME and spending money wisely, I would bet my Life on SAW or GB axe and NO other."

I am intregued by Fiskers axes - do you have any thoughts on them or axes with polymer shafts? Other that the inability to repair in the field if handle is broken, what would be downsides of a polymer axe handle?

i like using an old fashion roofing hatchet, it has a large flat bit and a hammer on the back along with a notch that can be used to pull nails or fix a bent knife tip (personal experiance) im sure theres more uses for that notch as well. if you get one make sure its an older one becouse they have a higher carbon steel and hold a much better edge!

Thanks Dave, another great video. I have a couple 40's us army hatchets, Eastwing in about 15 and 20 inches, and proud owner osf SAW26 and SAW16. I hauled in some oak and waiting to test them out. The SAW have a thin profile and very sharp!!! Would not have thought to spend that much but worth it. SMKW has SAW26 for $65 I think.

I just recentley purchased a hawk from your site and I love it. The steel and the edge holding capability of this hawk make it well worth the price.

I have a GB small forest axe and a forest axe. They are great axes but to expensive to be common man. I picked up a couple of vintage Plum and Collins heads for $6- $10 each. Many vintage axes were made out of high quality steel. I put a new 24" handle on one of the Plumbs (2lb) and have been testing it out over the past month. The conclusion is that it takes and holds an edge just as good as the GB forest axe but for a total cost of under $20. Now that's a great common man axe on the cheap!

@wildernessoutfitters amen brother. you don't really understand the value and superiority of a Wetterlings or GB axe until you've held it in your hands.
you're better off saving money with your knife. a $10 mora and an $80 axe are a much, much better choice than a $100 knife and a $30 axe.
as for the folding knife ... it makes sense to have a small one, maybe 3" blade, hollow ground, that you keep razor sharp just for skinning and food prep.
