How to add subtitles to a video permanently by hardcoding (embedding) them into the video by encoding it using MeGUI. This tutorial covers how to encode and hardcode your subtitles into an XviD AVI file. It also covers briefly how to do the same thing into an h264 MP4 file.

Tools:
AVISynth - http://sourceforge.net/projects/avisynth2/
MeGUI - http://sourceforge.net/projects/megui/
MKVtoolnix - http://www.videohelp.com/download/mkvtoolnix-unicode-4.4.0-setup.exe
MKVExtractGUI2 - http://www.videohelp.com/download/MKVExtractGUI2.2.1.zip
VSFilter - http://www.videohelp.com/download/VSFilter2.37and2.39_20090624.zip

  • why the audio is delayed and not going with subtitiles?

  • @demon6937 Most likely your source video is a VFR (Variable Frame Rate) which is a pain in the arse to deal with. I would suggest finding out first if that's what it is and if it is, then just try to find a different source that is constant frame rate.

  • It says there is no function called DSS2 and the other one doesnt work:(

    help please?

  • @flowEdit You need a dll file that comes with haali media splitter called avss.dll Download and install Haali Media Splitter then go to it's folder and copy that dll file over to your avisynth plugins directory. After that DSS2 will work.

  • Question, how do I hardcode them if I want to eventually get MP4 format? Trying to get 1080p Avatar (15GB) to mp4 with hardcoded subtitles to play on my PS3...so any help?

  • @harthaljas Sorry for the late reply. I'm not sure what the problem is exactly that you're having. If avisynth tells you there's an error, what error does it say and what is your avisynth script? To encode it to h264 mp4 all you need to do is find a ps3 x264 profile from the dropdown list and select it, then encode it. The script should be the same. I'm not sure why you're having problems encoding to ac3. Go into your megui folder and make sure there's something there for ac3.

  • @kurdprownage With the program I was using, when it said it had an unexpected character, it was because the file of my video had a forward slash (/), and my Windows XP computer doesn't allow characters like that to be placed, so it couldn't read it.

I highly doubt that is the problem, and I'm sure you've already solved your problem... but this might help (lol).

  • If you have a VFR file and you cannot find one that isn't what would you suggest? Other than that this guide has been a great help.

  • when i put my .avs file into MeGUI it says: unexpected charachter'' ''

    please help me

  • @that1guytim I've done exactly what you told flowEdit and it still doesn't work, what am I doing wrong?!

  • @that1guytim c'mon i'm not really an expert to this i guess this tutorial is not working for me or i rather surrender and learn japanese
