The demostrations were done in oil paint, but exactly the same principles apply in watercolor, acrylics, etc.

The webinar covered all the aspects of colour mixing including:
1) The components of colour (Hue, Value and Chroma)
2) How you eye sees colour, including how to mix black
3) Primary and secondary colours that make up the colour wheel
4) How to use the colour wheel to match a paint color.
5) The colour mixing rules that are used to mix highlight and shadow colours
6) How to create dimension / depth in your paintings using the color mixing rules.

Some of the colour mixing questions Nolan answered were :

1) How to paint using black
2) How to mix shades of brown paint
3) How to remix the same colour again in watercolour.

  • Very interesting and informative lecture! One small thing...he's wrong about the color/light wavelengths. Violet light has a very short wave length and red light has a long wavelength. Yellow light is somewhere in the middle.

  • @CAfontguy I just use examples of different wavelengths to explain the concept - didn't bother about getting the actual wavelengths correct as an artists doesn't need to know the correct frequencies of light, just the fact that white light contains the full spectrum of light ;-)

  • I placed a comment here earlier and now it's gone!? Geez, must be gremlins in the system! Anyway, this was priceless information, I cannot thank you enough. It's not often one has the opportunity to have the basics broken down in such a clear and concise manner, it's the foundations that will help us all become better artists. Excellent stuff, thanks again! And again... and... now what happened to my last comment? Now, I'm off to practice mixing my primary's.. :o)

  • @TruthSeekingElf YT must be battling with something at the moment 'cos their stats system is also giving hassles. Anyway..thanks for the comment, glad the webinar helped you :-)

  • why did you cut it in half O_o ?

  • @HoulMello The webinar is full length. Somehow after I had uploaded the original file, YT's processor software added a second copy of the video onto the end, so it ended up replaying a second time without sound -_- Apparently something to do with the format the original video was in.
