Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.3 in d minor, Op.30 1st movement.
This is the live video of The 6th Hamamatsu International Piano Competiton in Japan. Date: Nov. 25, 2006. The pianist, Tae-Hyung KIM won 3rd prize.

  • Both cadenzas are great, but I prefer the ossia version. This concert is very shady and I think the ossia cadenza matches the concerto character better than the other, which is lighter than the ossia version.

  • rachmaninoff didn't write the lighter cadenza for horowitz, he merely wrote it as an alternative which actually he prefered; apart from gieseking in '30&'40 no one used the ossia cadenza till much later - this is a brilliant rendition of the ossia, but the shorter one has a lot to commend it, and often adds to a performance - often either cadenza can make or break the flow of a performance - here it comes of wonderfully, just as the short one does for rachmaninoff himself

  • I like that he plays the original cadenza rachmaninov wrote, not the "horowitz" one. As much as I like Horowitz's recording I hate the cadenza rach wrote for him.
