  • @ThomasAChang I'm sorry, but this last statement is just not true. You should familiarize yourself with the whole concept of free (as in freedom) software. Rather than personal insecurity - it is concerned with the general insecurity of proprietary ownership of digital tools and means of communication. Google "Stallman" and "punkcast" for some explanatory videos.

  • Eben Moglen is one of the very few people I've heard say anything truly intelligent, accurate, and very much needed, in a long time. When I tell people about the dangers of social networks, and Facebook in particular they look at me like I'm a conspiracy theorist.. they just don't get it. This is a great video.. Thank you!

  • Wow, I felt bad about watching this with Flash to begin with, and now I feel bad about watching it on YouTube! D:

Great overview of the situation. It's good to see we've taken some steps in this direction since the video was recorded and uploaded. We definitely have a lot left to do.

  • This is a fantastic lecture. I'm only sorry that I only discovered it a year late.

  • @UnclePutin

what about redunancy? let's take 2 micro SD cards, RAID 1 and a third for "hot spare".

in addition, depending on file type and thus data size, we back up to devices near by, like mobile phones, portables, connected through bluetooth or wifi, @home, friends, local store, public transport, additionally.

  • Interesting, but how would the "Freedom Box" concept handle the issue of backing up data? Obviously, the device can fail, so the data needs to be stored "in the cloud" somewhere right? How would we go about keeping our data private--through some sort of encryption?

  • I agree with you, but I have posted this video to my facebook wall

  • eben's a top geezer! he does the same introductory schtick about having no date but that's ok...he's sure got his lecture together, loads of good stuff
