Part of the TCM's Film Festival "Race & Hollywood: Asian Images in Film". Robert Osborne and Dr. Peter Feng discuss some aspects of the movie The Good Earth(1937); starred by Paul Muni and Luise Rainer. She won an Academy Award in the Best Actress category. The film also won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, was nominated for Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Picture. Aired on Thursday June 12, 2008.
I read "The Good Earth" when I was 15 and howled my eyes out. When Wang Lung took Lotus as Wife No 2, I could have killed him. O-Lan was the true hero. And never once did I get the impression from Pearl Buck that the Chinese needed to be Westernised, seeing that we were still in the early parts of the industrial revolution ourselves, AND had more than our share of silly superstitions!

Thanks, I missed the commentary to THE GOOD EARTH. I love the film as Luise Rainer's performance.
