In this installment of "Sun on Sports," Minnesota Sun Newspapers sports editors John Sherman, Greg Kleven and Nick Clark re-cap the Feb. 3 boys basketball matchup between Hopkins and Robbinsdale Cooper, both undefeated at the time. The Royals won the contest 100-78.

Hopkins entered the game with the No. 1 ranking in the state Class 4A poll. Cooper came in at No. 3.

"We played poorly at certain stages, but overall we played fine," said Novak. "I think that was the case for Cooper, too. There was a big crowd, a fun crowd, and a lot of Who's Who people were there."

One of those luminaries in attendance was WCCO Radio personality Sid Hartman, who was on hand to check out two University of Minnesota recruits, Royce White of Hopkins and Rodney Williams Jr. of Cooper.

White won their personal duel by outscoring Williams 21-19.
Trent Lockett of Hopkins led all scorers with 23 points, while teammates Mike Broghammer (17) and Raymond Cowles (13) were other high scorers.
"Defensively, we have a ways to go and we got careless with the ball," said Novak.
Still, Hopkins' talent was more than sufficient to cover either of those deficiencies.
Hopkins might be the first team in Minnesota prep history to start four NCAA Division I signees, and there is also plenty of talent coming off the bench with junior D.J. Peterson, sophomores Marvin Singleton and Joseph Coleman and ninth-grader Siyani Chambers.
The Royals' win over Cooper last week was their 16th in a row.
