@ohlonepsychvids I credit Williams after seeing a long interview he did with Charlie Rose about Oliver Sacks. Williams has a lot of depth to him. You need to learn more about the man.

@tatia641 I can't say enough good about Oliver Sacks. I have several of his books and have watched many of his videos on YouTube. I think he has a wonderful gift and is an incredibly articulate expositor of the human experience.

@ohlonepsychvids Thanks for clarifying things. Now I feel ripped off by what was a dishonest protrayal. I bet most other viewers were also led to believe that it was meant to be historically accurate.

This is so bitter sweet, I just saw Awekenings last night and was so moved by it, I wanted to know the real story behind it. It's nice to see some of the patients remained "awake" from it.

I suffer from something similar to EL,Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
caused by ANA/Epstein-Barr Virus, otherwise I need to take Amino Acid tablets, multi-vitamins supplements to have enough energy for the days work!! : P
When I saw this movie, I had no idea who Oliver Sacks was. Because of this movie, I found out, and have since read some of Sacks' books, have seen some of his TV presentations and also a lot of his videos on YouTube. This movie was also my introduction to knowledge about that "sleepy sickness" that infected so many people decades ago. I admire Robin Williams for taking a serious interest in these and other human issues.

@bodryn I'm glad that you got interested in Sacks and his work. Robin Williams didn't write, direct, or produce the film, "Awakenings," however. He was simply hired to "act" in it. Don't credit the star of a film with it's creation; they often have very little to do with the movie being created.

Robin Williams did an excellent job of capturing Oliver Sack's compassionate personality in "Awakenings". He even looks a lot like Sacks. But I wonder why the movie used a fictitional character - Dr Sayer - to portray Sacks. Were other details fictionalized as well?

@prschuster Robin Williams actually did a TERRIBLE job of portraying Sacks. Just because he has a big gray beard doesn't mean his acting job was good or that he looks like him. The reason the character wasn't called Oliver Sacks is that Dr. Sacks objected to the idiotic script. Sacks did not have a relationship with a nurse, and the entire story was fictional. Only the disease and L-Dopa are real.
