Karen Kirst-Ashman is a social work academic at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She has written numerous social work text books, including 'Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare' and 'Understanding Generalist Practice' (with Grafton Hull). We at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa use these texts in our undergraduate social work courses, towards a Bachelor in Social Work.
One of Kirst-Ashman's key foci is the Planned Change Process (elsewhere called the Generalist Intervention Model). This is a 7-step model of the helping process, applied to work with individuals, groups and communities. I teach this process to my first year students, and it is then taught in much greater depth in second year.
This is one of six videos, designed to illustrate key elements of the Planned Change Process in work with individuals. Each video is 2-4 minutes long. In total, the six videos are 20 minutes. Obviously, it does not show everything. But in a single lecture at first year level it serves to give a visual and practical example of the process.
This fourth video illustrates step 4, IMPLEMENTATION, in which I show a brief excerpt of the actual therapy. This is taken from the intial part of the second interview. I use a strengths perspective, specifically influenced by Michael White's narrative therapy. The client, who had presented with a problem saturated story of 'victimisation', here shares a unique outcome without realising it. My response is to highlight this counter incident and begin to weave together a counter narrative, centred on her as a 'survivor'.
The case that is illustrated is based on a real case that I worked with previously. The cilent is played by one of my third year students, Fikile Bukhosini, whose participation I greatly appreciated.
I hope these might be helpful for other academics, as I have been unable to locate appropriate video material for the Planned Change Process elsewhere on YouTube.
