The follow-up to my video "Another terrifying video". I vent my frustration with a pernicious piece of daft rhetoric that has become accepted even in semi-respectable circles like governments, which is the 'precautionary principle' which in short is the idea that we should always assume the worst and act accordingly, even if the feared danger is spectacularly preposterous.

One point I'd like to add here is that choices are presented as if they are between a risk, and no risk, whereas in fact of course they are between one risk (such as the world's heating up due to carbon emissions) and another, different risk (such as attempts to lower emissions leading to climatic disaster of a different sort).

  • Dihydrogen Monoxide is a deadly thing, when there's acute exposure to the lungs.

  • @TheKingdomofErnor They got loads of people to sign a petition in Stockholm to stop them putting it in public fountains.

  • I love the one where the guy gets people to sign a petition to ban Di-Hydro Monoxide (a potentially lethal substance that is prolific in the food-chain and atmosphere). As soon as they hear 'Monoxide' they panic and sign. Petitions to ban water should not be supported.

  • @wesmatron I was going to do one on that, and still might, even though I now know that others have had the same idea.

  • >... the terror of volcanoes, of global warming, of whatever it is, big sharks with teeth and little weevils that burrow into your brain ...

    Don't forget space hamsters!

  • @Intelus I've heard that they are even worse than the giant mutant star goats.

  • I was expecting something different from this video..

I was expecting you to make a chart about why women should sleep with you.. and the possible consequences if they didnt..

    I felt so let down.

  • Thanks. That's another reason women should sleep with me, but I let that speak for itself.

  • ..some ladies (or at least their CO2-emitting boyfriends) might consider the implications of your conclusion ..inconvenient.

  • The precautionary principle has some very useful advantages. It means that, where research has found a plausible risk, before some some drug or anything else that could make a lot of money for someone can be produced, the person who produces it has to prove that the risk is not significant.

I personally think, and I think you'll agree, that there are many people who would gladly take steps toward making loads of money without properly considering whether those steps are a good idea or not.

  • @TheKingdomofErnor

You can also die from heavy doses in other parts of the body. Look up the news story on the "Hold Your Wee For A Wii" contest held a number of years ago in Sacramento, California. It was done as part of a radio program on 107.9 FM, 'The End'.

As for global warming, or climate change since the concept of an aggregate rise in temperature usually makes people respond with, "Lulz, it was snowing in [insert part of some country here]," drowning sucks: if true.

  • Isn't this arguement known as Pascal's Wager, too?

  • You're better when you stick to history and military matters ;). Ignore the fear mongers, but listen to actual scientists. There is still room for uncertainty in this of course, but there is nothing counter intuitive about human-made carbon dioxide (and other gases) can affect the climate. This effect of certain gases has been known for a very long time.

  • Not related to this video, but now that I have the opportunity.

Can you make a video about why the romans switched their Gladii to the Spathas?

(Of course I can read a load of text, but that isn't entertaining)

  • You are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • An even more insidious argument, and one that particularly affects professional scientists, is that the measures to prevent global warming are beneficial -- no, necessary! -- regardless of whether global warming is real or not.

With the what-have-you-got-against-clean-energy-and-pollution-control argument, you can be 100% right and perfectly honest, and still be the bad guy if you don't get with the winning team.
