A lot of folks have asked me about the new Rawlings synthetic broadswords. As you can see, they allow for a style of fast, energetic broadsword fencing without much gear. With wooden wasters, we would have needed to go about half as fast as this, or wear a lot more equipment. They are flexible to the point of being a little bit "droopy," but that's exactly what a lot of old Highland broadswords were like, so it's a plus as far as we're concerned. These are available in the US from woodenswords.com.

  • You should really give them a try if you get the chance, they are a lot of fun to fence with.

  • Well done! That is an exciting bout to watch!

  • One of our members got one and I was impressed by the thing in person. It hasn't taken a bend yet, and it seems a bit stiffer than what ya'll have. Judging by the heft of the thing, being used to getting whacked with a rattan singlestick, I'm not so sure that this will be any friendlier--save on thrusts. But I'm looking forward to it. So much so, that I ordered a German longsword to work on the Scottish two-hander... I know it's on the shorter end, but it's what's available in synthetic.

  • sweet music

  • From what I am seeing I am not terribly impressed. I don't like how they have already taken a bend. Are those just the prototypes, or the final productions? I would want a thick blade, but at that point, I would guess that would require more padding for sparring.

However, just to say something good about them, it does look like you can spar safely with them, and considering the wasters that are currently on the market, that is a bonus. They also look much more lively in the hand.

  • Yes, droopy is the word. I have a feeling that would bother me quite a bit in a bout. It's one of those things I'd want to try before buying.
