Furthermore, the teacher did the wrong thing by getting drawn into a pointless argument and giving his behavior attention that allowed more time to escape the task.
It is hard to say through one observation, but the student apparently doesn't understand the material being taught. Rather than expose his problem, he chooses to avoid the problem by acting up in order to escape doing it. He doesnt' want to work with others because they will think he is stupid. Find a way to help him academically and the behaviors should decrease.
Ignoring can be useful mojave19, but the teacher did not ignore all the comments or outbursts. What we have is not an escalation as in the last case; however, we obviously have a child who needs to be plugged into his class such that he is feeling a part of the class & thus enjoys the classes contingencies of reinforcement & additionally the shaping of more appropriate behavior.
1 method is to create small groups that get him interacting more as opposed to allowing students to chose the team.
I think the teacher handled it great. The kid obviously has problems at home. I think this teacher could spend some 1 on 1 time after class or have a 'big brother' mentor for this kid to get inside his head!
Well, almost two thousand people viewed this and nobody, has a suggestion how he or she would have handled that kid? I don't like the teacher ignoring his outbursts.

The minute the kid started "acting up" I would've said "I can't discuss it now, we'll talk after class."
0:32, when he yells "you calling me a liar?" the teacher should say "I can't answer you if you're going to yell."

the teacher should ask the KID to ask his partners if they have prepared for that activity or he is the only odd kid who is offside.

The teacher should have immediatly pulled this student aside and addressed his inappropriate behavior instead of letting it escilate.
