SACRIFICIO

Directed by Erik Gandini and Tarik Saleh
Camera Mårten Nilsson and Lukas Eisenhauer
Editing Johan Söderberg
Produced by Atmo for SVT Documentary
Participants: Ciro Bustos (revolutionary and artist), Felix I. Rodriguez (ex. CIA-agent), Gen. Gary Prado (Bolivian Army), Regis Debray (Philosopher), Pierre Kalfon (Historian), The Jimenez family (family of the deceased guerrilla fighter Camba), Humberto Vázquez Viaña (Writer, brother of El Loro), Jon Lee Anderson (Che biographer), Sgt. Mario Teran (Bolivian army - executed Che Guevara)

After a year of guerrilla warfare in Bolivia together with a small group of 52 comerades, Che was now dead.

His dream of uniting Latin America through armed revolution put to an end. The person who more than other has been doomed in the history books as guilty of Ches death is his former lieutenant, Ciro Bustos (above).

When captured he drew Ches portrait for the Bolivian army. Since then he has been living in silence. He now appears for the first time in a documentary film. His version of the events raises questions about how history is written.

Winner of:
First Prize at the 2001 International Documentary Filmfestival "It's all true", Sao Paulo, Brazil.
First Prize at the 2001 International Documentary Filmfestival of Oporto, Portugal.
Best Non-Latinamerican Documentary at 2001 Festival de Nuevo Cine, Havana, Cuba.
Best use of music and sound, Prague, 2002 "One World" Human Right Film Festival.

  • Che’s radicalism was spawned from living in Guatemala during the 1953 overthrow of Jacobo Arbenz by the CIA at the behest of the United Fruit Company (those lovely capitalists who liked to kill brown Central Americans so Americans could have cheap bananas).

Che saw the brutality of U$ Imperialism up close, and gave his life in Bolivia to defeat it. Che fought 3 U.S.-backed dictators during his life (Batista, Mobutu, Barrientos).

History may not ever see such a brave man again. VIVA CHE!!

  • However, many of those who participate in abuse of power, are corrupt and who sell their mothers are trained, educated and supported by the 'yanki'. Latin America, like so many third world countries, created and maintained as such by first world countries, has so much natural resources and labour population that serves the so called 'national interests' of the yankis and other imperialist powers of the world. It is easy to blame, inside or outside forces. Not many will do anything about it.

  • Che was an experienced jungle fighter. Who sent him to the barren Altiplano with no cover? Che only spoke Spanish. The local people only spoke Aymara'. He was sent to the only one of 2 totally landlocked Latin countries with little or no chance of resupply? Fidel and Raul got rid of a troublemaker and potential future threat to their power as they got rid of others like him.
