What he is talking about is that many modern initiation ceremonies are more like a thatrical performance that is simply 'done'to the participant. He describes a more experiential event as being 'organic'. I am guessing he is thinking more extremem type of initiation, one i which teh participant has more involvement and more of a trial maybe. I guess health and safety regulations water down the type of things most organised groups can get away with!

Organic makes me think entheogens, oneirogens, lucid dreaming and holonic awakening/integration.

I think he means "Organic" in the sense of a psycho-physical change in the body. The development of clairvoyant abilities or being possessed by a Daemon of that tribe. A "gut" (ritual) in Korean Shamanism (known as Muism) that cures the Mudang (shaman) of her Shinbeoyung (Spirit Sickness) and reveals to her the identity of her spirit partner would be considered an "organic initiation".

In one hand you get out what you put in. In another sense, if there's no purpose TO the initiation, other than, just an "experience" or formality, it serves no purpose.We are initiated and re-initiated to the world throughout the phases of the day - the way I see it.
