Aristotle Onassis 1906-1975 was the smartest businessman of Asia Minor and Greece.
The immigrant from Smyrni, made his first million by his wits alone. Nobody helped him. He was 23.
Flamboyant, tempestuous, raucous, truculent, and belligerent, lavish and generous, loving and cruel, loved wine, women and song, in that order.
Onassis was a big spender. He worked hard and played hard. He "sailed in high winds" and made it.
Aristo was a winner. He had big dreams. Big ideas. His projects were big, bigger than anyone else's, and he executed the plans perfectly.
Relentless in the single minded pursuit of his objectives.
Never afraid to speak his mind. His enemies, and he had many, called him "the old Turk", but never to his face.
Self educated, by the shores of Smyrni, no Continental Engineering and London School of Economics degrees, like the current crop of shipowners.
Maria Callas was the only true love of his life. Maria, always adored him and her last pilgrimage was to Skorpios and his grave.
Maria stated once: "I would like to be Maria, but there is La Callas who demands that I carry myself with her dignity." Aristo freed the Maria in herself.
He met Kings, Presidents, Sheiks and dictators. Dated Princesses, stars, starlets and divas. He had seen it all, and done it all.
Onassis advice on being successful: "To be successful, keep looking tanned, live in an elegant building (even if you're in the cellar), be seen in smart restaurants (even if you only nurse one drink) and if you borrow, borrow big."
He said once: "After a certain point, money is meaningless. It ceases to be the goal. The game is what counts."
Aristo, was true to his name, the very best player in the game.

Jackie loved money and Onassis loved celebrities. They deserved each other. However one must not judge them. She gave the US class and dignity and then went to live her own life away from the Kennedys. Onassis was a great enterpreneur no doubt but in the end money did not bring neither happiness. Onassis was Mafia. He was nothing more than a common criminal. Made his millions in "Turkish cigarettes" or what we know as opium. Drugs. That's how he distributed it was through his shipping line. In 1957, he devised the kidnapping of Howard Hughes, essentially assumed control of his empire by using doubles. I have no doubt in my mind he controlled the American Mafia and had the Kennedys killed because they doublecrossed him. Nixon was his too. So were LBJ and Ford.
