Winter In Newfoundland usually comes with constant high winds, short days, cold temperatures, overcast sky and too much snow to know what to do with. But that doesnt mean you cant have fun.
I had some ideas before the snow set in, about kiting in winter and how we'd survive it this year kiting through the cold and stormy months that lay ahead. Some of the ideas consisted of some shooting in a wide 16:9 frame, getting some new snow gear/clothing and a short journey into the hills to find that untouched white blanket of snow with some reasonable winds.
While its not impossible to kite in winter in the mid to high northern latitudes, the amount of snow accumulated during these months can make it difficult at times.
The first snowfalls were very enjoyable. It was a beauty to look outside, see a little dusting on the ground, the trees, the trails and covering the fallen leaves that had indicated the last of fall in 2006. It was clean, beautiful and a welcomed change in scenery once youve seen a PRISM Qpro sliding across the window an inch above the powder. However, seeing the leaves now faded and frozen was a true indication of our color palette draining, and the transition into the cold season.
Early morning sunrises shifted long ago by this point and now consisted of watching the street lights finally shut off well into hours of the workday.
Soon enough the ball fields become over run with snow, two and three feet deep. The city streets became dirty with salt and sand, roads leading to the coastline and beaches were skipped now as the snow clearing trucks passed them by. Soon on into February it was difficult to find that white, clean, untouched dusted blanket of snow that once looked so inviting.
At times, which seemed like weeks apart, the clouds broke, the winds settled slightly, and the storms subsided. The elements came together long enough for an opportunity to harness the wind once again, to channel it beneath our tethered wings, and allow light into the lens.
Amongst the short days, overcast skies and dreary landscapes there is still beauty to be found, a landscape worth searching for and a breeze worth pursuing.
With spring well on the way now, seeing the ice melt and ponds thaw, reminds us that we made it through the harsh cold, weve endured, and Embraced winter once again weve survived it.
This short kite film is about the seasonal transition into the cold winter months, and the struggle to continue kiting year round, which is well worth it.
This is not a trick video by any means and the final version focuses more on story line footage then flying footage to tell the story. Nonetheless its about adventures to be had, kiting in Newfoundland during winter with the PRISM kites.

I really like your videos, but sometimes the music is a bit noisy to listen on headphones over the web. Compression does things.
Keep up the good work.

The only thing to quibble about is that I hardly see the kite . . . Surely a great kite like the QP deserves better than that :) No hard feelings.
