OK I am reading Oms by the Dozen english translation and it is revealed that the Traags (Draags in the movie) were once water dwellers. But the scientist Zarek did something that enabled the race to become amphibious and breathe in air and water.
I have only read 5 short chapters and there are many differences between the book and movie, bur tthe book is intriguing!

This was a nice background story for the Draags...an invasion was defeated by this Zarek. His immortal existance and transpiercing could be alluded to the martyr St. Sebastion. Great clip!
