    This is just a theory, but this is how I think how people got confused over what's emo, and what's not. My Chemical Romance came out with a good emo album in 2002 called "I Brought Your my Bullets, You Brought me Your Love." This record was darker than most, but still an emotive hardcore record. In 2004 they released a record called "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge " which did not have the emo sound. They made the genre popular, and got signed to a major label, and teenagers thought that was emo.
