This special explores the relationship between the railroad and residents of the Shenandoah Valley in the twentieth century (with a few flashbacks to the nineteenth century). Residents and railroad employees describe their deep connection with and daily dependence upon the railroad. Personal experiences, archival documents, film and video, slides, photographs, posters, and artifacts chronicle the history of railroad development in Winchester, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Charlottesville, Lexington, Clifton Forge, Elkton, Luray, and Swoope.
