how well(distance wise) does this radio work? Could it hit a repeater 150 miles away and still have good sound quality on 5 watts? I need a quick answer, because I have found a heck of a deal on one. I am very familiar with manpack radio Ops from the US military. Need to know some intimate details on this one. 73's KJ4PTC.

I'm not sure because I had never tried the 817 that far; I can tell you that on 70 miles with a ATAS-25 antenna I can talk and hear this repeater with great sound on 5 watts.
Now you make me wonder about that, I should try one of these days just to see what happens.
I tell you what, if I do it, I'll let you know.

FYI, my 817 came with two different ends for the antenna. The one you show is for 6meters. The smaller coil is for 2m and 70cm. Sure is a fun radio. 73

Thanks for the comment, mine came with both coils also, I agree the long coil works for 6 meters but it works with 2m an 70cm as well, some times I use 6 meters and instead of change coils back and forw. I use the one that has the 3 bands.
Thanks again ka0zoz, 73
