"Then Came You" was a 1974 Grammy-nominated hit for American soul singer Dionne Warwick and American R&B group The Spinners, and credited to Dionne Warwicke and The Detroit Spinners (from 1971--1975, Warwick added a final 'e' to her last name). The track was written by Sherman Marshall and Phillip T. Pugh, and produced by Thom Bell. Released during a time that Warwick's chart fortunes were at an ebb after moving to Warner Brothers Records in 1972, the Philadelphia soul single was a rare mid-1970s success for the singer. Sung as a duet with Spinners main lead singer Bobby Smith and The Spinners, who were one of the most popular groups of the decade, the song became Warwick's first ever single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and also became her highest-charting R&B record reaching number two on that chart. It was also the first number-one pop hit for The Spinners. Spinners member Phillippe Wynne took over lead duties at the very end of the song. While Warwick was signed to Warner Bros. at the time, this release actually came out on Atlantic Records, which was The Spinners' label, but also a sister label to Warner Brothers. Dionne Warwick (born December 12, 1940) is an American singer and actress who became best known for her partnership with Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Warwick ranks as the 20th most popular hit-maker of the entire rock era (1955--1999), based on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Charts. According to Billboard Magazine, Warwick ranks second only to Aretha Franklin as the most popular female vocalist with 56 chart singles on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998. The Spinners is a soul music vocal group, active under that name since 1961, and popular with a long run of pop and R&B hits during the 1970s. The group, originating from Detroit, still tours regularly. In 1954, a group of friends who grew up together in Royal Oak Township, Michigan, just outside Detroit, came together to make music. Billy Henderson, Henry Fambrough, Pervis Jackson, C.P. Spencer, and James Edwards called themselves The Domingoes, but James Edwards lasted only a few weeks. He was replaced by Bobby Smith, who sang lead on most of The Spinners' early records and many of their biggest Atlantic hits. C.P. Spencer left the group shortly afterwards, and would later go on to be a member of the Voice Masters and The Originals. He was replaced by George Dixon. The group renamed themselves The Spinners in 1961. This name was chosen after looking at popular car hubcaps and noting how they spun around on a car's wheel.
