In 1969 Robert Sollen, a reporter for the Santa Barbara News Press, broke the story of the Union Oil offshore drilling rig spill, an environmental catastrophe for the Southern California coast and Channel Islands, which have been referred to as "North America's Galapagos." Was anything learned from America's first offshore oil drilling spill? Many striking similarities are explored, and a precedent-setting vote on offshore oil deposits takes place in the area affected by the spill.
