Professor Aries courses, research and writing concentrate on the period of adolescence and the complexities of the transition to adulthood in contemporary American society. She has just completed the book Race and Class Matters at an Elite College, which shares the results of an interview study she conducted that follows four distinct groups of students through their first year at Amherst: (1) affluent white, (2) affluent black, (3) high financial need/limited family education white, and (4) high financial need/limited family education black. The book describes the challenges faced by black and white students from different class backgrounds and the educational benefits students derived from living in a diverse community. Professor Aries received a B.A. from the University of Michigan, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. She also received an honorary degree from Amherst College in 1983.
