TrainingPeaks' Marisa Sterling caught up with renowned author, coach and runner Hal Higdon recently in Boulder, Colorado for a short interview. Watch the video to learn a few of Hal's tips on nutrition, running with devices, the value of using a structured plan to train, the benefits of cross-training and how he started running in high school simply to impress a girl. Having helped hundreds of thousands of individuals reach their running goals through his writing, coaching and online advice, Hal Higdon remains one of the premier experts on running. Hal Higdon has been running for 61 year which has included eight Olympic Trials, numerous World Masters Championships, and 111 marathons, including being the first American finisher in 5th place with a personal best of 2:21:55 at the 1964 Boston Marathon. But Hal is best known as an author. He has 34 published books and more on the way. He has written hundreds of articles for magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Runner's World, New York Times Magazine, National Geographic and others.
