Here's a really cool flute: a High Spirits Triple 'Sparrow Hawk' in A made of Eastern aromatic cedar. As you'll notice, melodies are played on the center flute, and the left and right-side flutes are both drones. What's special about this is that the right-side drone has three holes which can be covered or uncovered with little leather straps. This allows the player to change the drone note. Here, it's set up so the right drone note is C. This is Part 1 of an improv based on a simple little thing of mine I call the Farmer's Dance (Don't ask why; it's just a name that popped out). I start out playing only the center flute, then I shift to the center plus left drone, center plus right drone, and then all three together (and my mouth sure looks goofy when I'm doing that!)Part 2 will be up shortly... Thanks for checking it out!

  • omg!!! that was awesome!

whats that song called. i wanna learn it on my flute!

  • @a13pm I call it the Farmer's Dance, but that's certainly open for revision! So glad you enjoyed it. Look under the video for more information.

  • where could I get an instrument like this?

  • @geo289 Look under the video where my comments are. There's a link to the High spirits website. Go there & look under "Triple Flutes". The Eastern aromatic cedar version is $410.00; spanish cedar & walnut versions are $325.00. Not cheap, but loats of fun to play. Peace ~ Bruce

  • How is The Triple Flute different to the Double?

  • The main difference is that there are two drone notes instead of one. Also, unlike the left-side drone, which has no holes, the right-side drone has three holes that can be covered or uncovered in whatever combination you like using the little leather straps. As you can hear in this video, I have two different drone notes going on: the fundamental A on the left, and a C on the right. Playing all 3 at the same time gives me some lovely full chords. It takes a good bit of air, though!
