TOP 5 SKYRIM SECRETS

5 -- BECOME A VAMPIRE

It's a pretty bizarre disease to be infected with, but it's certainly more interesting than being poisoned by an enormous spider. A bit like AIDS, there's only one way to contract it -- and that is to find a vampire and have them attack you whilst you calmly heal yourself (they are very weak, so this shouldn't be an issue). It's a multi-stage disease with some positive and some negative effects. Any other disease (i.e -- poison or paralysis) will no longer be a problem to you, and you're slightly stronger in the evening. On the flip-side, however -- townspeople get more fractious around you, and your regeneration takes a hit in the daylight. During one of the quests for the Mage's College, you'll have to recover three books that have apparently been stolen by a naughty student -- and as you delve deeper into the tombs, you'll notice three Vampires locked up in cages. They'll leave you alone, but if you start the fight, they'll try and transform you. Remember to keep healing and you'll be a vamp in no time. Alternatively, you can visit Broken Fang Cave (to the west of Whiterun), inhabited solely by Vamps and do the same thing.

4 -- HEAL YOURSELF TO YOUR HEARTS' CONTENT

Yes, when times get hard and money is sparse -- or even when you're face to face with a dragon and you're not prepared, here's a little tip to make sure you can hide away and heal yourself without running out of magicka. Dual Wield two restoration spells: Fast Healing and Equilibrium. One replenishes vitality, while the other converts that into magic. How do you like them apples?

3 -- GET MARRIED... IF YOU CAN BE ARSED

Like many things in Skyrim, this wasn't made clear by the games itself - just a predominantly resurfacing rumour in the mist. I can confirm it is indeed true, and you can marry a whole host of women, men or cat-people (if you bend that way). A lot of the "whores" who want to tie you down by putting a ring on it are situated in Whiterun, some possessing their own homes and are decent battle companions. There are many ways to get on their good side, so I'll let you figure those out for yourselves!

2 -- AWOOO! BE A WEREWOLF.

Who'd have thought it, eh? Be a Vampire and a Werewolf in the same game? Well you can, quite easily. The main way to approach this little gem is to contract the disease as part of a quest. Sign up to the Companions in Whiterun (you'll hear a lot of people taking about them, and they're located in the large building to the right of the stairs that lead up to the Castle). The transformation animation into a wolf is amazing, and it serves as faster transport for those of you who can't be dealing with horses.

1 -- RED EAGLE'S BANE

A fantastic and relatively secretive quest that can be found relatively early on in the game and culminates in you obtaining one of the best swords Skyrim has to offer. Yes, visit the dry-humoured Court Wizard in Whiterun and take a look through his book-shelf. There'll be a book in there somewhere called "The Legend of the Red Eagle" (or something to that effect). It's a relatively long quest, and at a low level (I was 3 when I attempted it) -- it'll take you a long time and plenty of deaths to complete. The first half pits you against rebels on cliffs and inside tombs, and once everyone's dead the Red Eagle's Bane is yours (an enchanted Nord sword that hits at 12 damage and simultaneously sets the undead on fire and makes them flee for 30 seconds -- absolutely hilarious). If you're not satisfied with this, however, feel free to go all "King Arthur" -- and place the sword in the stone that'll now be marked on your map. It'll unlock a secret tomb that houses "The Red Eagle" -- a badass boss who can take off half your health with one hit. Kill him and you get the "Honed Ancient Nord Greatsword of Burning" -- a truly remarkable weapon. It can kill almost anything in roughly one or two hits -- striking at 33 damage and burning the target for 10 points. Good luck!
