Don't beat yourself up! If drums shells and heads were perfectly round and flat, tuning would be a breeze. Tuning is a challenge... you gotta be up for it!
Thanks sure do appreciate that. I wouldn't be helping you if I tuned your drums. That's only solution is every drummer should be a drum tech. Devote some time from your practicing schedule to practice tuning, be consistent and you'll wake up one morning saying to yourself..."duh...why didn't I do that 10 years ago!
Bob, Thanks for all you are doing to help the drumming community. After drumming for many years now, it still can be frustrating to tune the toms. can u help with my problem? i usually tune the resonant head a maj.2nd/minor3rd above the batter. this makes the toms sing nice, but it's a very soft feel. i like an open sound, but need more rebound. i think i saw a video where you said that tuning the batter head slightyly higher than the res. head will give more rebound? thanks again!
Thanks for the kudos jason... really appreciate it. Pitch the batter head above or below the pitch of the reso-head will generate "Pitch bend" in sound... like bow-ooo or downwards bend ooo-bah. Rebound? Hmmm, can't remember saying that but the higher the tension of the batter the more responsive it becomes.
Hey man, I've been drumming all my life and I had yet to find an easy, fast way to tune my drums. This is the best method I have ever seen. Thanks for the video!
Hey Bob first off thanks for your time I am learning a lot and your info is very helpful and easy to use. Basically I have 10,12,16" toms, I know tuning is really based on preference but how close should be tune to harmonize as a whole, how many steps should be in between them, I play guitar normally and like to learn as much as I can so I don't know if maybe I'm thinking too hard or what any help would be greatly appreciated!
Your welcome q. These are "overall" pitches (striking the drum while suspended on a stand or legs) that will get you in the ball park 10"> F 12"> C 16"> C octave lower than 12"
