The city of Porto lies on a hill next to the river Douro and contains many historical locations. The two story high bridge, the Ponte de Dom Luis 1, is part of the historic centre. The history of Porto goes back more than 800 years, a good reason to preserve its heritage for future generations. Officially designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, this site is to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past.
Porto has many faces, it is the capital of the province, a bishop's see, university city and centre of trade. It is a busy city with pretty and ugly streets, picturesque old neighbourhoods, impressive architecture and a lots of traffic. Everything that moves tries to make its way through a crisscross of streets, alleyways and squares. Much of the prosperity depends on the port and shipping activities.
