This is part one of a long gameplay vid of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver on the PS1 as played on a PS2 with texture smoothing on.

This is easily the best game in the series IMO, and is one of my favorite PS1 games as well. As you may be able to tell by the length of this vid, I tend to have a hard time putting it down once I pick it up. It's one of those that just grips me for hours at a time no matter how many times I have beaten it.

I love the design of the game from the great gothic atmosphere, to the voice acting and story, to the well thought out puzzles (yes, I know people complained about the block puzzles, but they really weren't that hard), and the huge (for it's time) open world. Perhaps it's a bit too open at times (sometimes you don't really know where to go, or what to do next), but overall, I've got very few complaints about this game. Some people may attack the combat, and while the combo list may be limited, the many ways to dispatch your enemies add plenty of variety, and choice to the fighting. I also like that the game gives you a decent variety of weapons to use from pipe's you tear off the walls, to pottery, to even rocks.

And it's not as though it matters by today's standards, but this game gets my vote as the best looking 3D game on the PS1. MGS is also in the standing with it's gritty realistic style, so I'd say maybe it's a toss up between the two in my book. I know that some people like to list FFVIII, but what little 3D polygonal elements it has aren't nearly as impressive. Most of the scenes in the PS1 FF games were 2D prerendered images. Hardly that impressive.

I'm not going to do a full playthrough of the game, because I tend to forget where things are (I can never remember where all the glifs are), but I will put up these two long vids of the game to either bring back nostalgia for fans, or to bring some new interest to the game.

  • I love this game, though I love Blood Omen and Blood Omen 2 as well. Too bad Soul Reaver 2 was a letdown. Defiance was pretty decent.

Great video! :) You beat me to doing a playthrough of this.

  • @elbryan42 I'm not going to do a full playthrough. I just go caught up when capturing video. I always forget where all the hidden items, and glyphs are. You'd do a much better playthrough than I ever could.

  • Just curious, how does the second one on PS2 compare to this in your opinion? I haven't played many games in this series but they all look really good!

  • @thesouz18 I've had the second one for years but I have yet to complete it. It doesn't feel as good to me. The combat was made a little more annoying. I'll have to get back on it sometime in the future. By all means, keep an eye out for it, but something was lost in the move to the next generation. Even the art style isn't quite as good.

  • How many games do you collected?

  • @onlyad I've never sold a single game I ever bought, so a lot.

  • the best game forever

  • This game was awesome back in the day! Thanks for uploading it.

  • From a technical standpoint, Soul Reaver is a damn impressive game on Playstation. Shame Crystal Dynamics are too busy milking Lara Croft for her worth now rather than working on further instalments to the Legacy of Kain universe.

  • I don't remember the hand-to-hand stuff being quite so difficult. Oh well.

Did you ever play the Dreamcast version of this? It was a bit prettier, and some of the jumps were a little easier.

  • I'm probably gonna use your playthrough to help me with mine. Lol. =) Nice vid!

  • Such a awesome game... I used to play this for hours on end.

  • I love this game shame there will be no more

  • Definitely one of my fav game openings :P The voice acting is top notch in SR

  • This game has great dialogue.
