November 17, 2010 -- At a breakfast discussion, International Adoption and the Global Orphan Crisis, co-hosted by The Daily Beast and Urban Zen, filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem—who was adopted from South Korea when she was 8 years old—underscored a child's connection to his or her birth home. "I gained tremendously from being raised here," she said. "But on the other hand, I lost everything I loved by coming to this country"—her family, identity, language, and even memory. "One does not replace the other."

  • I completely agree with Deann's view on international adoption. Many people don't realize the repercussion of taking a child from his native environment. I struggled for several years in finding my identity and accepting who I really am.
