This is from the final full rehearsal for Trooping the Colour - called the Colonel's Review. It was held in London on 6 June 2009 which, unfortunately, was dull, wet and windy.

This is the march along The Mall and back to Buckingham Palace which concludes the ceremony on Horse Guards Parade.

The Household Cavalry are at the front. Then come the massed bands of the Brigade of Guards comprising five military bands, with fifes and drums and pipers from the Scots and Irish Guards (not visible here) at the rear.

The Mall is very wide but you can see that the massed bands need all the space they can get. The two guards on the left have to step back quickly to avoid a collision!

  • Wonderful shooting ! Congratulations ! May I ask what camera did you use ? It seems it was standing on a tripod , so stable the images are .

  • Thanks very much, Spiciu, for those very kind remarks. The camera was a Panasonic TM 300 - which is capable of excellent HD results. This was my very first outing with the camera and I left everything pretty much on auto. I think I could do better now.

  • Now that's talent - riding a horse and playing the trombone at the same time lol.

  • ... especially when your horse looks as though it might want to head off up the side street for an adventure with a police horse - see horses in rows four and five!

  • The trombonists always say the trick is to play away from the horses head because if he throws his head back the mouthpiece could go down the musicians throat!

  • That would make for an interesting glissando! The trombone must be particularly difficult because it is the only instrument here that relies on both embouchure and accurate positioning of the slide to get the note in tune.
