"IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race."
In his honor, drivers took part in a five-lap salute around the oval.
@steven288 "lots of people had gone home already". There is that, and also the seats closest to the track are often sold last, because the view is better up high. If you look at the shots from before the accident, most of the lower section is empty.

@electrictroy2010: It's usual for IndyCar on ovals. Call it bad promotion (not for Vegas, though), call it lack of funds from the races, call it no help from the media (ESPN Sportcenter only has IndyCar moments when Danica is involved in something)... Other than Indy, it's just "business as usual". But it NEEDS to change!!!
