  • well i wouldn't say your ignorant. i would question what films you've seen though. the saddest music in the world is a pretty accessible one in my opinion. if you haven't seen that i'd suggest renting it. keep in mind, too that films like this one are just short films and as short films go generally directors have a greater artistic freedom. so anyway i would say the feature guy maddin films are a little more centered than his short films. anyway, hope you enjoy.

  • If I remember correctly, this is a collection of working images for another film, not a film itself. Like artist sketches for a larger painting; there's no intention that it would make narrative sense. But why to like it--simply the way it looks, the amusing quality of the intercut text ("the hunger of the eunuchs" for instance), the stylization of everything.

  • If you are not afraid, check this new horror film called "STRANGE ROOMS" at strangerooms website, very creepy and scary. It is about strange hauntings at one old and eerie quiet apartment in Hollywood, CA.

  • Guy has a book of his writings...journals, film treatments, with pics out. Called

From The Atelier Tovar. Marvelous, and very revealing.

Buy and support this frequently broke master....

  • It is not the fact that you are ignorant or not, but that you can't let yourself impressed by images the story of which seems fragmented. You should take this as a dream, that's nothing intellectual.

  • I agree.

This is basically a video-collage or "film collage" and it's a rare-breed that enjoys these 'types' of films. Avant-garde cinema, in my opinion, is such a joy because it goes beyond the typical, conventional setting (and often plot) to create something totally unique and extraordinary from the other conventionalisms of the world.

And besides, you have to be a bit crazy, as well. *smile*

  • There's the matter of taste, some things just don't work with some people. I happen to like it a lot but the fact that someone else doesn't has no bearing on them being ignorant or not.

  • I can't figure out why people like this stuff so much. I can't figure out the story for the life of me, and Maddin's films seem completely random and unintelligible.

Now let's see how long it takes before somebody calls me ignorant....

  • strangely painful to watch, but I like it. The grain of the film looks funny with the pixels, and the fast edits looks funny with the occasional glitches.
