An Interesting Story behind the band and this Concert:
In 1970 Before settling on Carl Palmer, ELP approached Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience; Mitchell was uninterested but passed the idea to Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix, wanting to try something different, expressed an interest in playing with the group. The British press, after hearing about this, speculated that such a supergroup would have been called HELP, or "Hendrix, Emerson, Lake & Palmer". Due to scheduling conflicts, such plans were not immediately realised, but the initial three planned a jam session with Hendrix after their second concert at the Isle of Wight Festival (their debut being in Plymouth Guildhall six days earlier), with the possibility of him joining. Hendrix died shortly thereafter, so the three pressed on as Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
@Bozzy83 YEEEESS - THANKS for that - the mists of time are rolling back now - I can hear it agin wafting over the island (and heard from Southampton - it wasn't the only thing wafting over!).
I think John Newton - the English vicar/poet who wrote it might take issue with the adjective you used to describe it (Hendrix of course wouldn't). However since it's main theme is 'forfgiveness' I'm sure he'll let you off !!

I was there - that was when Bob Dylan sang out of tune (he was under the influence - weren't most of them?) and the theme tune of the festival was a fantastic guitar version of Amazing Grace (who by?). So I ain't heard this for fourty years. The only bit I dont want to be reminded of is the latrines .....
They never did get it together with Jimi after this (only their second appearance). Why? Within three weeks he was dead.

I've heard Emerson in interviews say that ELP was always planned as a THREE person band. It was KEYBOARD oriented and he did NOT want a guitarist (other than Greg Lake, who also played bass) in the band. It was Greg Lake who called Palmer and asked him specifically to join the band, saying this would be an excellent move for both of their careers as musicians. And Jimi was back to working with Mitch Mitchell by February/early March, '70

1:09 -- Several minutes of brilliance were left out... I wonder who decided to make such a cut, and why...
