The terrific Irish invader Gallant Man outlasts Bureaucracy and others. Sorry, there was no track call available.
Gallant Man previously owned the Belmont Stakes race record of 2:26 3/5 before the mighty Secretariat came along sixteen years later and obliterated it.

  • Hey cf, could I use some of your videos? I´m working on a little racehorse - video - project, but I couldn´t get so many of these old race scenes like you did (respect for that, really o.O)

    :D

  • @Rimfaxe96 Sure, go right ahead. Good luck with your video, and thank you for the support. I appreciate it. :-D

  • Know who the horse who broke down at the start was?

  • No, and I'm having a hard time tracking down that information, too. Do you know who he was?

  • Pop Corn. The jockey was Ted Atkinson. Pop Corn's left front foot actually stuck through the reins for a few seconds, and was rescued by the starting crew. Gallant Man paid $2.30 for the win, and actually cost the racetrack $3,186 because of the 5% minimum on a show bet. Running order was Gallant Man, Bureaucracy, Field of Honor, and Jocko's Walk the pacesetter. Gallant Man carried 126, and Bureaucracy 116. Handle was a Saratoga record of $1,522,596 and the crowd was its second largest, 27,173.

  • Hey, thanks for the info. Where did you find it?

  • @cf1970 Thank you very much! :D

  • Good effort from the second finisher, Bureaucracy. Earlier in the season, he'd won the Dwyer Handicap and a little later he was second by six lengths to Bold Ruler in the Jerome.

And he was a half-brother (by Polynesian) to Buckpasser.

  • Gallant Man was one of the best horses in history to not have won a championship. Nonetheless,he had a stellar career on the track, and he was a very good sire. He lived into his early 30's,that is OLD for a horse. Ironically, his rival Round Table lived into his 30's also.

  • Gallant Man was bred in GB,he was bred by the Aga Khan,he was by Migoli(a high class racer),and out of Majideh,by Mahmoud (high class racer and very influential sire). He was part of a package of horses that were sold. He wasn't even the pick of the litter,a horse named Bold Nero was. Ironically Bold Nero didn't do much on the track, except engage Bold Ruler(as a rabbit) in the early stages of the 57 Belmont and press him to run to fast and Gallant Man came along and knocked off his rival.

  • Found the date of the race, and went to the New York Times archives - free with my subscription, expensive otherwise.

  • This was Gallant Man's fourth consecutive win. It would have been five straight if Willie Shoemaker hadn't misjudged the line by 1/16th of a mile in the Kentucky Derby, stood up in the reins, and caused Gallant Man to lose by a nose! Many racetracks now have "Shoemaker Poles" with an orange and white bullseye to remind jockeys where the finish line is.
