Architect: C Design, Inc. - YMCA Camp Thunderbird was in need of a large shelter to house camp activities during adverse weather conditions while providing an iconic symbol to the camp. The goal of the project was to develop a design in keeping with the existing wooded camp vernacular and to create an inspirational building that defines the childrens camp and its values. The open-air structure of the pavilion is designed as a heavy timber framing system. This design is both protective and educational. Environmentally conscious building practices such as day-lighting through a central skylight, natural ventilation, and renewable materials are utilized throughout the design.
