I was in Minot at the time the B-52 made an emergancy at Minot International airport in town. The "BUFF" landed at the airport instead of the base because The ILS, (instrument landing system) that allows the aircraft to land in bad weather failed on the A/C. The base, located 15 miles north was fogged in (make note the temp was 5ºf) and the minot airport was light and patchy fog, still good for a VFR landing. The runway at MAFB is 10,000' X 300', the runway at the city is 7700' X 150'. The B-52 wing span is 159'. The span between the outrigger wheels is about 140'. Not an easy job when there is only 5' room for error on either side of the runway. The A/C was loaded with enough fuel to get to
MAFB. It used about 5000'-6000' of runway and with no fuel in the wings the outriggers were not touching the runway

  • @JIM30747 Thanks for the note, it is always great hearing from former members of SAC. It was tough in the north land, but also very rewarding.

  • @tippersteffi1 Thank you for your service! In the almost 40 years since I have been discharged, I have NEVER met a group of men who were more dedicated, professional, and also serious than those B52 air crews.

  • LMAO I pulled security for that A/C. They recalled 10 of us and we had to take the WSA posting bus out to the airport. Another epic Minot fail.

  • I love ho there is literally no rotation on take off. It just lifts into the air. What a great aircraft. I wish I could see more of them in person.

  • back when i joined the air force in 79 all you needed was a high school diploma or ged grades didnt matter the military gave you their own test to determine your aptitude and determined what field you belonged in mine was electronics which covers a wide range of jobs from changing light bulbs to crypto i would up climbing 300 ft antanaes all day fixing them you had the better job trust me

  • @ghostman3331 I joined the air force to get away from Columbus Ohio...my lousy grades in school got me a snowplow/lawn mower job in Minot. That was part of why morale was so low among the troops. Bad grades got bad assignments.
