I made a mistake counting sheets in my last video that included a small discussion about 19th century (1800's) book printing. I hope to attend the O'Reilly Tools of Change conference next week where there will be plenty of different viewpoints about the future of publishing. I took it as a theme that it's important to acknowledge mistakes and keep an open mind, even about 8-up printing.

  • The traditional way of cutting page edges is with a paper knife or letter opener - just slide it into the folded page and pull it against the folded edge from the inside, sliding along as it tears the folded edge apart.

This creates a smooth, linear page edge with no tearing, though the edge is slightly rough or almost deckle-edged. That soft paper edge is one of the characteristic charms of old books.

    Scissors? Bah!
