When I was about 8, my grandfather couldn't figure out why I was putting the bread that he had put out for the birds in the birdbath, and why I would lie about it. This went on until he saw that it was the crow (and not me) using the birdbath to soften the bread for himself.

It's softening the foot up with water. Not to wash out the taste.
