Liege Belgium Apartment Building Collapses After Blast of Suspected Gas

At least 20 people have been injured in a suspected gas explosion that caused a five-storey apartment building to collapse in the Belgian city of Liege.
Two of those hurt are said to be in a serious condition in hospital.

Rescue workers have been searching the rubble for more survivors.

Immediately after the explosion, fire swept through the building and thick smoke billowed up into the air from the top windows of the 100-year-old building.

Hours later, emergency workers were forced to flee when the facade of the building came down.




Liege mayor Willy Demeyer said several people were trapped in the rubble and firemen had found at least two who were still alive.

"Firemen are working to try to bring them out," he said.

In all, 50 people have been evacuated.

Officials said a gas leak is the likely cause of the explosion.

The blast shattered windows 100 metres away from the building, spreading debris and dust throughout the adjacent streets of central Liege.
