The thing that came out of the earth was "Rei" she's basically the bringer of the apocalypse. The orange stuff was "LCL" the primordial ooze that all life on earth is created from. Onno was the creator, and he was insane, not high. Watch the TV series then watch the movie.

@razormint21 It's actually a sad song, but in an upbeat way. It works since the song, and the movie, are all about people hurting others and adapting - only for the better in the movie instead of for the worse. Gendo was a fine example of what you shouldn't become, which is why Instrumentality literally tore him in half.

I agree...and I really feel sorry for Shinji. He gets way more crap than he deserves. You have to remember that he had no parental guidance, grew up without being able to confide in anyone, and so got by in life by doing what he was told...so can you blame a 14-year-old boy in that situation for feeling a bit scared in his current situation? I felt a strange fatherly instinct when I saw Shinji raging like that...I just wanted to give him a big hug and tell him everything's going to be fine.

Give this sequence an orchestration, and it would be very scary, depressing and traumatizing.
But they gave an upbeat tune filled with hope and rainbows and etc...
