"Can you be me?" This type of role-reversal and pretend play (not unlike what child-life specialists do at our hospital some of the time) has helped our little guy deal with the world of medicine. This was especially useful after a very traumatic urodynamics test procedure he had to undergo with no sedation. It wasn't appropriate for him to reenact it on the corresponding body parts of us parents, so we/he modified the "therapy" and engaged in it as long and often as was necessary. What seemed really important to him was 1)to be in the position of control, and 2) to have the adult express understanding of his pain by acting out how he'd felt to some extent. Similar post-traumatic play or pre-procedure conditioning can be done with doctor's kits and other props such as "dental equipment," tubing, etc.
ahaha!!! sooooo cute!
