That beautiful, loud, mournful whistle is why, tho other lands may have a steam heritage, North America has the finest. I know my British and German friends love their steam engines too- but I only wish they could sound off with a Nathan 4,5, or 6 chime whistle instead of those anemic peeping teakettle whistles. Sorry to sound like an ethnocentric Yank, but you can hear the engineer play that whistle here like a church organ. Simply beautiful!

that locomotive used to be in white river junction ,vt it was part of the steamtown collection when they were up north.

This might be the most representative minute of video ever; that displays all that is wonderful about steam. The low whistle, the laboring chuff of the pipe, the smart Pacific comes around the bend, coal smoke streaming into the sky. Wonderful. The driver slip at the end is icing on the cake.
