Lyrics:

It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Chorus:
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
Mama's gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

Bridge:
I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

The movie was very similar to the song; it was sad, exhilarating and inspirational. It taught three key issues that can be useful in all aspects of life. Hard work and Perseverance- The little boy wanted to buy the shoes for his mother. Unlike the majority of children, his first thought was not to ask his dad for the money. He asked his father for a job so that he could earn the money to buy the shoes. His father did not give him one, but the kid did not let that stop him. He really wanted to buy those red ballet shoes for his mother and so he and his teacher collected used cans. The cans were only five cents each and it took them until Christmas Eve to be able to afford the shoes. He worked until he accomplished the goal he set out to accomplish; to buy his ailing mother some Christmas shoes. Selflessness- The blonde ladys husband was overly egotistical and supercilious. He made arrogant comments throughout the movie to the guy who worked on his beloved Mercedes. He also put his career before his family. Buying a new house was more important to him than his wifes happiness. When I began thinking there was not even a parcel of hope that he would change, he did. The little boy was standing in line on Christmas Eve to buy his mother those shoes and after all of that work was still five dollars short. However, after hearing this, the man paid for the shoes. Appreciation- The man obviously struggled with an internal conflict revolving around the appreciation of himself. The ailing mother was very appreciative throughout the movie. Especially at the end, she received those hideous red shoes from her son. I know that any mother has to appreciate gifts their child gives them; but she really loved the shoes. She knew her son had just been thinking about her and she appreciated that.

  • the 1st time I heard this song, I had just become a single mother of 2 beautiful boys. I ended up in and out of the hospital w/ heart failure I still take alot of meds but get to see my boys grow up everyday. That year, 2 weeks before christmas- I couldn't afford to buy my kids alot since I couldn't work b/c of my health. My 2yr oldsked me if santa would bring mommy a present. I said "no, only kids get presents" He pulled 2 pennies out of his pocket and said "mommy, I'll buy you a present"

  • Merry Christmas everyone!!!! I lost my mother today 4 years ago and it's still very hard to listen to this song and even celebrate Christmas but this is such a beautiful song with a wonderful meaning. My mom had her Christmas shoes on when she met Jesus...I love you mom and miss you very much!!!!!!!!!! Love your daughter Tina, give dad a hug for me too!!!!!! Please everyone cherish your family while you have them here. God Bless you all!!!!

  • @tabbers1227 that's too adorable.

  • My mom is sick and is always in pain because of a back injury she is still alive thank God I wished I could take away the pain I would give up everything but her I would give anything in the world for my mom to be free of pain

  • Now I'm all man, but I remember the first time I heard this on the radio, I didn't get teary eyed.....I flat out cried. Still do when I hear it.

What I like more about this song is it smacks us down. We get all caught up in the materialism of Christmas and everything we want. It reminds us Christmas is not about us, it's about God and the ultimate gift he gave us in Jesus Christ. No iphone, flatscreen HD TV or $500 designer jeans could ever compare to that.
