I also wanted to refinish the wood but I went a different way. I stripped the stock and smoothed it out and then rubbed it with linseed oil. The old sayin' goes: once a day for a week, once a week for a month and once a month for a year and you will get a great looking protective finish.

When I wanted to brown my gun barrel I just wrapped the barrel in an old t-shirt and soaked it with white vinegar and waited about 5 minutes. The old bluing came off with a bit of 0000 steel wool soaked in the vinegar with light pressure. Then I used Plum Brown. If your not into a store bought finish you could just pee on the barrel and set it in the corner for a few days and repeat. Once you get the color brown you like buff it up with a bit of 0000 steel wool and a bit of gun oil to preserve.

My Friend - Good Vid. Most people can't even change the oil in their vehicle so it's important that you show how to break down a basic single shot. Give Birchwood Casey a little credit for their bluing and refinishing kit! You did a great job on how to restore garage junk into a very usable firearm. Keep up the good work!!!

I've got this same bluing kit and been meaning to use it on my old .410 Model 94 Stevens. Thanks to you sir, I've finally got the gumption to get to it! Great job!

@86mountainman depends on the state. some states don't have silly registration laws and there is no need to transfer anything. Other states every sale must go through a FFL holder so the wonderfully intelligent state government will know who has what.

I had one just like this when I was a kid - .410 ga. Got a 12 ga Rossi with an exchangeable .243 barrel with it now. Thinking about getting a 20 ga single for brush hunting.

...have this same gun for home defence... Did some...a lotta work on 'er. Put a 6-round rack on th' side of the stock... over-size day/night-glo sights, led flashlight, a shortened heat-shield over barrel(secured to fore end) ...I did have a spike bayonet on 'er after 9-11 happened ...have since removed it... Socialist NY State 'legalities.' So I made the gun to look as those ol' 1870's Apache Spencers did with the brass tacks 'n' stuff... Looks cool. Shoots hot!!

The H&R Handi rifles will take shotgun barrels but the Topper shotgun recievers won't take rifle barrels. Also to get extra barrels you must send them back to H&R for the initial fitting or they won't send you the new barrel.
"I don't mind ugly, I walk around all day lookin like this." That cracked me up! Nice video.
