So, basically, you're depending on another company to host your valuable information? Yeah. No potential for problems there. Instead of fluffy clouds, how about a large building with hundred and hundreds of servers?

You put your data in the hands of many companies every time you use the internet. Online banking for example, is an example of a type of cloud (heavily secured, obviously). Cloud providers are, in essence, large data centers with thousands of servers. But cloud providers offer management layers to make it a better, more cost effective experience.

Cloud Computing Yields Cheap Hacking - from RedOrbit's site. College students broke in.

It's nice that people in marketing have come up with the illusion of keeping proprietary data safe by using the image of a cloud, something waaay up above that no one can touch. When the reality is, hacker will do what hackers will do: Find a way in.

Security breaches happen on cloud or traditional data centers, on single computers or via botnets. A stolen laptop is potentially more dangerous than anything else. And using a cloud is much like using a traditional data center. The security that you put into it is what you get out of it. With more attention being put on cloud, security gets better w/ cloud computing than traditional infrastructures.

"Cloud computing is a trap, warns GNU founder Richard Stallman

Web-based programs like Google's Gmail will force people to buy into locked, proprietary systems that will cost more and more over time, according to the free software campaigner"

Can't post the link but I'm sure you'll track it down on the Guardian UK site.

And the company I work for does the same thing for itself. It does not have to depend on some marketing fairy tale about the information being safer just because it's not all in our hands. We are a 24/7/365 operation and don't need the false sense of security that this latest trend delivers. We are VERY good at security.

Look at facebook lol. You put loads of information about your life on facebook and you are trusting them with it with out even paying them lol. Anything you put on the internet is hosted by a company. You had to make a YouTube account to type your comment, so now they have some info on you. The cloud IS a building with 100's of servers and real people working to maintain them safely and securely.
