Charla Nash, the US woman whose face was ripped off by a chimpanzee, has received a full-face transplant -- just the third of its kind.

Her family and lead transplant surgeon, Dr Bohdan Pomahac, speaking to reporters at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital said that while Nash was expected to regain control of her face, at this point doctors knew no way to "return her vision".

The 30-member surgical team led by Pomahac also performed a double hand transplant but due to complications the transplant did not take.

Nash was blinded and had her face, nose, lips and eyelids torn off in February 2009 by a a friend's 90kg chimpanzee named Travis.

At the time, Nash was trying to lure the chimp back into her friend's home in Stamford, Connecticut.

Al Jazeera's Mereana Hond reports.

  • who has a pet chimp any way

  • i fucking want to see her face now how it looks

  • God bless this woman for her strong spirit and those doctors for performing something nothing short of a miracle.

  • @theart1rm no problem =)

  • @pornoslut Oh I know that I was just ranting further on the foolishness of chimp pets. Didn't mean it to sound like I was ranting at you, just with you.

  • @theart1rm yeah I am was saying I agree with you ! I dont think they should ever be kept as pets they should be kept in the wild where they belong . I mean unless there hurt and someone is nursing them back to health and then going to bring them back to there habitat when there all better .

  • @pornoslut I see I made several typo's in my post. But the message was still crystal clear. That chimp had a jealous tantrum. They display, have all the same emotions as human. So they should never be kept as pets. If they hadn't stop him when they did, he would have ripped her intestines apart. What they do when they kill is horrendous, so horrendous they won't show it because it is so violent.

  • @theart1rm agreed !!!

  • @biozamadotcom agreed

  • Doctors are so amazing.

you Doctors out there, I want you to know that I really admire all of you who do such honorable work.
