I thought it was the other way round, that you want the ultras to soak up the damage and the lings to deal damage. Lings deal more damage for their cost than ultras so you want to keep them alive.

Yes, you're right.
But if an Ultra gets close enough to a Marine he can pretty much 1 shot him. (Pending he has the +3 melee attack) Sometimes with Zergling ai, they stack up behind each other too much and can't get in the hits while the ultra IS the hit. It's best to have a good mix of both supported with Dark Swarm.
